Call for Abstracts

The Scientific Program Committee is pleased to invite abstract submissions for the Meeting.  

Authors are requested to review the below instructions and details in the abstract submission portal before preparing and submitting an abstract.

Key Dates

Please note the below dates and times are based on Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10).

Abstract submission opens: November 2023
Abstract submission closes: 5pm Friday 16 February 2024 Extended to 5pm Friday 23 February 2024!*
Notifications sent to authors: Monday 15 April 2024
Author acceptance of offer due: 5pm Friday 26 April 2024
Early bird and speaker registration deadline: 5pm Friday 17 May 2024

Please note: a small number of late-breaking abstracts may be accepted after this point until 5pm on Thursday 4 April for poster presentation only. The final number of posters that can be accepted after this date is subject to venue capacity. Details of submissions for late-breaking abstracts will be provided in due course. 

Presentation Types

Abstracts can be submitted for one of the below presentation types: 

Oral presentation: An oral presentation delivered by one presenting author. Oral Presentations will be notified of their length of presentation time in the acceptance letters. Abstracts not selected for Oral Presentations may be eligible for a Poster Presentation.

Poster presentation: A Poster Presentation constitutes a visual display of research projects. The poster display will be an integral part of the program with dedicated times for delegates to interact with poster authors and ask questions. Full details of the format and display of Posters will be detailed within acceptance notifications sent to nominated presenting authors. The top poster presentations may be considered for 3 minute rapid fire presentations. 

Oral or poster presentation: Submitters should select this presentation type if they would like to be considered for either an oral or a poster presentation. 

The final decision on acceptances and on publication and presentation formats are at the discretion of the Convening Committee.

Themes

Abstracts for the Meeting may be submitted under the following themes: 

• Archaeal & Eukaryotic Viruses
• Bacterial Immune Systems
• Bioinformatics & AI
• Ecology & Evolution
• Microbiome & Systems Virology
• Phage Therapy
• Synthetic Biology
• Virus-Host Interaction
• Virus Structure and Function

Submitters will be able to select up to two themes that each abstract may be considered under. 

Presentation Awards

A number of Oral and Poster Presentation Awards will be offered onsite at the Meeting. To be considered for these Awards, applicants must:

• Be a presenter of an oral or poster presentation that has been submitted and accepted into the VoM 2024 Meeting program. 
• Be a PhD or post-doctoral student (evidence will be requested at the time of submitting your abstract). 
• Be a member of ISVM at the time of the Meeting. Registration is free and you can register via this link. 

Note: 

• The number of Awards on offer, and the value of each, will be made available on this website in due course. 
• A certificate will be presented to successful applicants at the Meeting, with funds for the Award transferred onsite at the Meeting in Cairns.
• The judge’s decision is final and prize winners will be announced in the closing session of the Meeting.

Abstract Submission Amendments

Once submitted, abstracts can be amended via the portal up until the extended submission deadline of 5pm on Friday 23 February 2024.

Abstract Notification and Acceptance

Abstract review results will be communicated to the corresponding authors on Monday 15 April 2024.

Please note the details provided as the author contact should be for the nominated main contact for your abstract. All correspondence relating to the submission will be directed to this person and they should in turn distribute to all co-presenters.

Acceptance of this offer must be notified to the Meeting Office by no later than 5pm on Friday 26 April. 

Abstract Presenter Registration

The invitation to submit an abstract does not constitute an offer to pay travel, accommodation or registration costs associated with the Meeting. Similarly, no presenter fee is paid to successful participants. 

Presentations must be delivered in person and the ability and willingness to present in Cairns will be a condition of acceptance into the program.

It is a requirement that the nominated presenter of all successful abstract submissions is registered to attend the Meeting. 

All presenters must register for the Meeting before 5pm on Friday 17 May 2024 in order for their presentation to be included in the Meeting program.
